Above all, maintain constant love for one another.

Paraphrase of 1 Peter 4:8

What would someone watching our lives say is most important to us? Our lives are not random, and how we respond when things don’t go our way reveals our foundational values—the things that get the ultimate say. The cross reveals what is of ultimate importance to God: God’s costly grace and love. When we rejected God, above all, God responded in love. If Jesus is our Savior and Lord, his ultimate values become ours, and his love becomes the force that shapes our lives above all.

The passage says, “Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins.” It may seem costly to love others when they aren’t easy to love, to respond kindly when others are cruel, to be patient when things don’t go our way, or to forgive rather than hold a grudge. But knowing and experiencing God’s love in Jesus leads us to love others—even in costly ways. God’s love for us leads us into loving Him and others, above all.
