Entering the Father's Joy - Luke 15:11-32
June 21, 2026
"We celebrate and rejoice because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found."
It isn't fair!
The parable of the prodigal son is more scandalous than we often realize because the elder brother's complaint is legitimate: it is not fair. While the younger son rebelled, rejected his father, and squandered everything, the faithful older brother worked hard and remained obedient, yet felt overlooked. Jesus told this story not primarily to sinners but to Pharisees and scribes who objected to His welcoming sinners, casting them as the elder brother who did not understand the Father's heart. The parables of the lost are ultimately about God's joy in seeking and finding the lost. Justice gives people what they deserve, mercy withholds deserved punishment, but grace gives more than is deserved. The Father responds not merely with mercy but with grace, celebrating the return of the wayward with joy and inviting all of us to join the celebration rather than remain outside in resentment.
It isn't fair; it is grace, love, and the joy of the Father.
